The Kentucky Stickhorses: Louisville’s New Lacrosse Professional Team

By Shannon Follette

To be back in Freedom hall and experience a professional sporting event was electric. In my opinion, Indoor Lacrosse has the passing game of basketball coupled with the contact of ice hockey. I was able to see the action from the beer garden and get a front row view of the intense matchup between The Kentucky Stickhorses and the Boston Rockhoppers. Be careful where you set your drink though; I witnessed a  body-check against the glass which sent the man next to me’s drink flying in the air! KA-BOOM! Not to mention Patrick Henry Hughes introducing the Kentucky Stickhorses with his amazing rendition of our National Anthem. Accompanying him was Hat trick (mascot) and the dance team “Fillies”,  KaZoing! Kid zone offering face painting & bouncy fun as well as a DJ setting the high energy pulse for the crowd!

The Kentucky Stickhorses is a professional Lacrosse league that has established itself in Louisville Kentucky.  Lacrosse is by far one of the fastest growing team sports in the United States. It’s the fastest growing sport in US and event attendance reflects the trend. Lacrosse has grown 24% since 2001. Lacrosse in KY is one of the fastest growing sports at both the youth and collegiate level. Since 2001, youth participation is up 138% to nearly 300,000. No sport has grown faster at the high school level and in the past six years is the fastest growing sport in the NCAA with 755 college teams. This does not include more than 500 College club programs, nearly 200 of which are women’s teams that compete at the US Lacrosse Intercollegiate Association level.

The Kentucky Stickhorses had an inaugural season last year in which we averaged just over 1800 people at all of our home games as well as going 5-1 at home and introduced many new fans to the sport.  We will have six home games (beginning January 5, 2013), and the team is privileged to host the play-offs this year as well. New this year is the KaZoing! Kidz Korral in one end zone with inflatables and other activities for our young fans. Opposite of them will be the Paddock Pub which allows fans over the age of 21 up close action right on the boards! Also adding to the atmosphere are the beautiful Fillies- the dance team for the Stickhorses and crowd favorite Hat Trick the mascot.
